About Marina

Marina Murayama Nir graduated from Western Illinois University in 2015 with degrees in Music Education and Flute Performance. They have had over 12 years of teaching experience with individual, group, school, and camp settings. They hold a K-12 Teaching Certification with an emphasis in Instrumental Music.

As a flutist, Marina has held several years of principal flute positions in band and orchestra, and has placed and won performance competitions on a national level.

Marina’s musical writing explores themes of mixedness, decolonization, and accountability. Though Marina has roots in the classical tradition, their current music weaves together synthesized electronic textures and lush orchestral soundscapes. Marina’s creative interests lie in the space where existing realities and imagined possibilities collide.

Murayama has played in a variety of settings, including film festivals, educational institutes, museums, graveyards, and more. They are currently completing a residency with Asian Arts Initiative and Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists, preparing to premiere their piece, imprint, ember, hearth on July 15th, 2019.
